December 31, 2013 by Tom Costelloe

Grandstream GXP2140 and Grandstream GXP2160Earlier this year I posted about the amount of changes Grandstream phones had gone through over the course of two years. At the time of writing the post 5 phone models had been discontinued and 10 new models had been released. Now here we are 10 months later and we can add one more to the discontinued column, Grandstream GXP2124, and add two to the new model column, Grandstream GXP2140 and Grandstream GXP2160.

WHAT IS IT?

The GXP2140 and GXP2160 are the two latest enterprise VoIP phones from Grandstream and are the replacements for the Grandstream GXP2124. Within the GXP family of phones they will be the higher end phones above the GXP2120 but don’t have as many features as the Android based GXP2200. Additionally they don’t have the video capabilities of the Grandstream GXV phones.

At a quick glance these new Grandstream phones share a lot of the same features and functionality. Both models have 5 programmable soft keys, dual Gigabit network ports, integrated PoE and support for PoE. The physical layout of the two phones is also vary similar with both phones sporting a 4.3 inch TFT touch screen and identical layouts of the core telephony keys.

Where the phones differ is in the line appearances, BLF extension keys and sidecar capabilities. The GXP2160 supports 6 lines and has a 24 programmable BLF keys while the GXP2140 is 4 lines does not have any programmable BLF keys but can be used with the GXP2200EXT expansion module to add additional functionality.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Both the GXP2140 and GXP2160 are targeted towards users who are more active on their phones and/or who are looking for more functionality and features. I see the GXP2140 as a good match for sales, customer service and other people who are in a role that may require multiple lines. The ability to add sidecars makes it a good match for receptionists or operators.

I see the GXP2160 as a good match for managers, receptionists and anyone that needs the ability to see the call status of a multitude of people quickly.
