At a TedXObserver <\/a>event in London last month author, activist, journalist, and blogger Cory Doctorow gave a talk outlining the ways we’re undervaluing our privacy<\/a> in an era of full disclosure and 24\/7 surveillance and asks the question:<\/p>\n

“How do we get kids to care about online privacy?”<\/em><\/p>\n

Doctorow states that Facebook uses “powerful game like mechanisms to reward disclosure” comparing it to B.F. Skinner’s<\/a> theory\u00a0of using social reinforcement to strengthen\u00a0a desired behavior – Like giving away information.<\/p>\n

Making Facebook Less Creepy<\/h2>\n

Parents and schools will spy on everything in the attempt to keep them safe but this may groom\u00a0them for an existence where\u00a0constant internet surveillance\u00a0is considered\u00a0legitimate, normal, and good\u00a0“teaching them to systematically undervalue their privacy years before they reach Facebook.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

When too much of the good internet is blocked by tryng to shield the bad, kids end up not using the tools properly. How do we make Facebook less creepy by not spying all the time?<\/p>\n

Tech savvy kids will circumvent whatever walls you put in place as Doctorow tells the story of what would normally be a mundane post about a Cisco router<\/a> firmware update on a friends blog.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Some girls were having a juicy,\u00a0gossip packed conversation in the comments section of this boring technology post and when asked why by the author, they explained that everyday a random blog post would be picked to leave comments\u00a0on for each other because\u00a0every other online outlet\u00a0(chat services, Facebook, MySpace, etc.) was blocked by their school.<\/p>\n

Network Privacy Best Practices<\/h2>\n

Doctorow endorses “network education”\u00a0 — Teach kids network privacy best practices to encrypt everything they do on the internet.\u00a0Teach them how to use\u00a0secure Voice over IP<\/a> connection programs on their phones, for example,\u00a0or\u00a0how to use\u00a0CCTV maps to move through town and avoid\u00a0having their locations recorded by nosy neighbors who like to spy on others.<\/p>\n

Networks\u00a0should continue to enhance\u00a0cooperation without damaging disclosure Doctorow states, and “Why do you need to know this?” should be the default position when asked for information.<\/p>\n
