{"id":13392,"date":"2009-09-08T18:07:27","date_gmt":"2009-09-08T22:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.voipsupply.com\/?p=13392"},"modified":"2016-01-21T21:46:21","modified_gmt":"2016-01-21T21:46:21","slug":"is-video-conferencing-over-hyped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voipsupply.com\/blog\/voip-insider\/is-video-conferencing-over-hyped\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Video Conferencing Over-hyped?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the ancillary technology that continues to grab headlines and investment from major industry players is <a title=\"video conferencing equipment\" href=\"\/video-conferencing\" onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'voip-insider-blog-post', 'click', 'video conferencing');\">video conferencing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The technology that allows users to &#8220;see and interact&#8221; with one another has gained favor with small and large enterprises alike during the last few years as a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More impactful alternative to typical voice conferencing<\/li>\n<li>Way to conduct distance learning sessions and trainings<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle to lower travel costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But is <a title=\"video conferencing equipment\" href=\"\/video-conferencing\" onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'voip-insider-blog-post', 'click', 'video conferencing equipment');\">video conferencing equipment<\/a> living up to the promises pumped out by vendor&#8217;s marketing budgets? Better yet, has video conferencing, which has been around since the 1970&#8217;s ever been more than hype?<\/p>\n<p>According to A. Michael Noll, in his piece &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercetelecom.com\/story\/noll-video-teleconferencing-bubble-emerging\/2009-09-07\">Is a video teleconferencing bubble emerging?<\/a>&#8220;, the answer is no and yes.<\/p>\n<p>Citing research conducted during the 70&#8217;s and 80&#8217;s Noll found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teleconferencing was best suited to regularly occurring meetings intended mostly for information exchange and similar low-risk purposes<\/li>\n<li>Public room teleconferencing was not successful and that the facilities had to be on one&#8217;s own premises<\/li>\n<li>For users, high-quality audio was far more important than video (can you say HD Voice?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In total the sum of research and Noll&#8217;s ascertains point to the fact that video conferencing has and continues to be a highly touted technology that has not lived up to its promise.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m no video conferencing expert.<\/p>\n<p>My video conferencing usage has been relegated to Skype, Vidtel&#8217;s video phone calling service and some extended demo&#8217;s using Polycom&#8217;s video conferencing suite. All of which have proven to be positive experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Yet none of these experiences have driven a full blown need for <a title=\"video conferencing equipment\" href=\"\/video-conferencing\" onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'voip-insider-blog-post', 'click', 'video conferencing');\">video conferencing<\/a>.
