(Part I)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Note:\u00a0 <\/strong><em>This is the\u00a0first of\u00a0a two part article that examines\u00a0a\u00a0switch\u00a0back to\u00a0traditional phone service from VoIP and\u00a0other user&#8217;s experiences.\u00a0 Click <a href=\"\/blog\/voip-insider\/making-the-switch-from-voip-part-ii\/\">here<\/a> for Part II.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While VoIP Supply will\u00a0undoubtedly sing the praises of switching to a Voice over IP telephony system we do realize that there can be hurdles\u00a0when you&#8217;re trying to get the best call quality and the most reliable service.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0a recurring theme that\u00a0you&#8217;ll notice in our &#8220;how to&#8221; articles under our article categories like <a title=\"VoIP Education\" href=\"\/blog\/voip-insider\/category\/voip-education\/\">VoIP Education<\/a>, <a title=\"VoIP Gateways\" href=\"\/blog\/voip-insider\/category\/voip-gateways\/\">VoIP Gateways<\/a>, or <a title=\"VoIP Systems\" href=\"\/blog\/voip-insider\/category\/voip-systems\/\">VoIP systems<\/a> is:\u00a0<em> Be Realistic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s considerably more upside to\u00a0VoIP\u00a0than just\u00a0cost savings\u00a0but at the same time we\u00a0understand that the technology can be a little temperamental and as noted previously, <a href=\"\/blog\/voip-insider\/voip-fastest-growing-industry\/\">VoIP technology will be the fastest growing\u00a0U.S. industry in the next five years<\/a> meaning we&#8217;ve yet to see what it can accomplish and how well it can perform.<\/p>\n<h2>Making the Switch From VoIP<\/h2>\n<p>Understanding\u00a0that VoIP is great but not perfect, economical\u00a0yet deserving\u00a0of the time spent doing your\u00a0homework first;\u00a0it was interesting then to read the article &#8220;<a title=\"Why I\u2019m ditching VoIP for the PSTN - Renai LeMay\" href=\"http:\/\/delimiter.com.au\/2011\/04\/19\/why-i%E2%80%99m-ditching-voip-for-the-pstn\/\">Why I&#8217;m ditching VoIP for the PSTN<\/a>&#8221; which got me thinking:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For all the good that VoIP has done for society, could there possibly be others out there switching back to traditional phone service?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I set out to answer that question.<\/p>\n<p>But first, what ungodly reasons were given to ditch the almighty VoIP?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Bucking the Trend<\/h2>\n<p>Reading that account on <a title=\"Delimter: Just Australia. Just Technology.\" href=\"https:\/\/delimiter.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Delimter <\/a>of Renai LeMay&#8217;s\u00a0VoIP experience\u00a0reminded me of a\u00a0different sort of trend that a few coworkers and I happen to be a part of &#8211; The <a title=\"Wikipedia: &quot;Reverse Commute&quot;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reverse_commute\" target=\"_blank\">Reverse Commute<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0The practice\u00a0of city living with a\u00a0daily commute to the suburbs for work.<\/p>\n<p>While I didn&#8217;t understand resisting a cost-saving technology that can increase operational efficiency and flexibility I had to admit, I have\u00a0good reasons for going against the grain too.<\/p>\n<p>But housing\/lifestyle choices\u00a0can be explained in any number of ways.\u00a0 Can LeMay&#8217;s anti-VoIP decision defend itself just as easily?<\/p>\n<h2>The Honeymoon Didn&#8217;t Last<\/h2>\n<p>For LeMay, his personal leap into VoIP started off\u00a0in just the manner that we would expect.\u00a0 He felt &#8220;free&#8221; and unburdened by high monthly charges, analog signals, and &#8220;finicky&#8221; copper wire.\u00a0\u00a0And when he set up his own business he\u00a0confidently looked\u00a0to VoIP again.\u00a0 However, in his experience, as time went on unacceptable problems arose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Long STD phone calls were prone to disconnection, complaints of an echo on the line, and strings of emailed voicemail messages would pile up\u00a0when the service wouldn&#8217;t work at all.<\/li>\n<li>Skype was barely usable when calling mobile phones and\u00a0voicemail messages not delivered for days or would appear at strange times in the Skype call list.<\/li>\n<li>No discernible technical problems found with updated hardware, computers, or internet connection led to a cancellation of the VoIP service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Simply Put: Simplicity Desired<\/h2>\n<p>As LeMay put it he&#8217;s &#8220;moving forward back to the past&#8221; to a simple and functional traditional phone service that accomplishes the singular feat of connecting two distinct voices.\u00a0 And while that may be all that it can do, he feels that\u00a0VoIP is a myriad network adversely affected by latency, QoS, hardware and software issues and he advises that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the years to come, it will pay for us to remember that obscuring technical complexity in our technology systems and ensuring quality of end user experience will be key.
