What Do You Know About Headsets?

Have you ever had the misfortune of purchasing a headset only to find out that it doesn’t work with your telephone, IP Phone, cellular phone or computer?

We have.

Ever find yourself wondering what headset best fits your business needs?

We have.

You’ve probably asked yourself numerous questions like:

  • Do I want a corded or wireless headset?
  • Do I like the over the head or over the ear headset style?
  • Do I want monaural or binaural?
  • What is Noise Cancellation and how will it benefit me and my employees?
  • Do I need a handset lifter with my wireless headset?
  • Do I want Bluetooth or DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology) wireless technology on my wireless headset?
  • What headsets are compatible with my IP Phones?
  • If I go with a corded headset, what is the proper Quick Disconnect (QD) cord to work with my headset and IP Phone?

That’s why we have created the VoIP Supply Headset Compatibility Matrix for IP Phones – the answer to your Headset compatibility problems.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let’s take a look at the answers to the questions above.

Do I want a corded or wireless headset?

Corded headsets usually run around $50-$110 but limit the user to make and receive calls next to their IP Phone, while wireless headsets run around $150-$400 but permit users to make and receive calls remotely often times accompanied by a Handset Lifter)

Do I like the over the head or over the ear headset style?

This is a user specific preference, while some users prefer an option that fits over their ear, others may prefer over their head. This is where you ask the question…what is more comfortable for you? Both corded and wireless headsets are offered to meet these needs.

Do I want monaural or binaural?

Monaural is a single ear headset no matter what style it may be. Most monaural headsets are used in less noisy environments and will permit the user to hear “side conversations” if needed. Binaural is two ear piece headsets which are usually required in noisy environments or where the user needs complete concentration of the call.

What is Noise Cancellation and how will it benefit me and my employees?

Noise cancellation is a feature built directly into the headsets hardware which cancels out all back ground noise providing the user with only audio from the remote party. Ever been on a call with someone on their cell phone driving 80mph down the expressway with their windows down?…yes all you hear is the wind…with a noise cancellation headset, you won’t hear any of that wind, rather the conversation you are supposed to be having.

Do I need a handset lifter with my wireless headset?

Most IP Phones require a Handset Lifter when using a wireless headset option. Only Polycom has an Electronic Hookswitch Feature (EHS) but requires the use of certain headset models and configuration. Please contact VoIPSupply for more details.

Do I want Bluetooth or DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology) wireless technology on my wireless headset?

Bluetooth technology Wireless headset options have a maximum distance range from base station of about 30-40ft. The upside to a Bluetooth headset is you can use it in the office and then pair it to your cell phone and take it with you when you leave. DECT wireless headsets have a maximum distance range of about 300ft, but can only be “married’ to their respective base station.

  • hmm, snom also have an Electronic Hookswitch Feature, atleast if you us a GN or Plantronics headset,
and what about cordles headsets, they are not mention in the list.

one note the BT and DECT, you only can have 12 headsets in the same office (channels), but with DECT you can have more than 100

  • @Mark:

Thanks for the note. If you are interested in submitting anything relative to this to make it more complete, please send us an email with your additions and we will add them.

  • This is great, I've been looking for a headset for my phone but haven't had the time to dig into them all to find one that works.

  • I have a client with two people using Grandstream 2000 phones and cordless headsets that plug into the handset plug (not the headphone looking plug in the back).
Both of them have issues with their phones freezing up (all the lights light up and it drops registration). Power cycling the phone fixes it but it's annoying.
Have you ever heard of this happening before?

    JD

  • JD... Try doing a firmware upgrade. This doesnt seem like the wireless headset is causing this issue with registration. You are correct as well with your wireless configuration, the wireless headset needs to plug into the handset jack on the phone and then the phones handset plugs into the wireless headset base.

  • What kind of corded binaural headset would you recommend to be used with an Inspiron 17 Laptop for doing customer service work from home?
