VoIP Gateways

Patton SmartNode Gateways Comparison: SN4170 vs SN5570

Choosing an ideal gateway can be a daunting task, especially when there are many similar solutions on the market. In this article, we’ll compare two popular VoIP gateways from Patton: SN4170 and SN5570 Gateways and help you pick the right gateway that works for you!

The SN4170 PRI Gateway Series

Ideal Users: Small to mid-sized organizations and service providers/ integrators

  • Small-to-medium-sized enterprises looking for effective ways to bridge PBX systems on multiple sites or connect them to a public Internet telephony service.
  • Service providers and network integrators looking for a gateway that matches up to ISDN standards in terms of features and quality.

What’s the difference between the SN4170 and the SN4171 VoIP gateways?

The SN4170 and the SN4171 provide similar features, however, the SN4171 offers an increased memory for users who have higher demands. If you are currently using the SN4170 and would like to have extra memory, you can easily upgrade to the SN4171.

A Basic SN4170 Application

The SN4170 gateway comes with advanced VoIP and security features for your seamless network integration. This device provides the T1/E1 PRI port that can be configured to be TE or NT, so you can easily connect your PSTN line or an ISDN PRI PBX. See the diagram below for a typical setup:

The SN5570 ESBC + Router

Ideal Users: SIP Trunk service providers and network integrators

  • SIP Trunk service providers – the SN5570 serves as a service demarcation point with the separate config domain feature where the local administrator can only modify configuration settings facing the LAN PBX.
  • Service providers and network integrators looking for a VoIP gateway that matches up to ISDN standards and solves SIP to SIP interoperability issues.

A Basic SN5570 Application

The SN5570 can be used as an Enterprise Session Border Router (ESBR) or as a VoIP gateway/router. This device provides excellent VoIP, IP QoS and security features for your network integration. Like the SN4170, all PRI ports on the SN5570 are configurable to be TE or NT, so that you can connect your PSTN line and an ISDN PRI PBX. Here’s a typical setup diagram:

SmartNode SN4170 vs SmartNode SN5570

Like every Trinity SmartNode, the SN4170 and the SN5570 VoIP gateways include the built-in WEB Wizard for fast and easy configuration. Both of these devices convert your PSTN to SIP and support up to 30 simultaneous VoIP calls. Also, Cloud support is offered on both devices. However, comparing to the SN4170, the SN5570 provides more advanced functions and features including:

  • Acts as an IP router for IP routing, QoS, VPN, and more
  • Supports WAN access with Failover to Cell Network via USB
  • Supports Transcoding for up to 16 SIP-to-SIP calls
  • More advanced VoIP security features
