If you are a new visitor to the VoIP Insider, or missed our coverage of the Unidata SQ-3000 WiFi VoIP + Video phone, you can catch up on this sweet little piece of hardware here. The Unidata SQ-3000 ups the ante for WiFi VoIP phones, adding G.722 wideband audio codec support and video conference capabilities. The phone also boasts a touchscreen user interface.

In our testing, the phone set up easily with a variety of Asterisk based platforms….call quality was very good, and video quality was surprisingly good for a low cost handheld device. The user interface on the phone itself could use a little tweaking for the US market, but overall it vastly surpassed my expectations. Unidata has already released a new firmware for the SQ-3000 which cleared up several minor issues.

The Unidata SQ-3000 is now shipping, and Unidata is set to release a very cool companion product for this wireless handset.

The Unidata SQ-3100 is basically a “thin client” desktop IP phone. It has the same form factor as a normal IP phone, but is designed to provide a docking station for the Unidata SQ-3000 wireless VoIP phone. When docked, the SQ-3000 can charge, and the user can interact with the phone in the manner they are accustomed to using a desktop phone. If the user wants mobility, they simply un-dock the SQ-3000 and take it with them.

No word yet on price or exact release date for the Unidata SQ-3100, but we’ll keep you posted.
