Review of the Phoenix Audio Technologies MT-306 Bluetooth Quattro2
Short:
If you want bluetooth connectify to a variety of different devices and expect things to work like any other bluetooth headset you might have used don't buy this product.
Don't expect to receive support from Phoenix Audio if you are having trouble with their product.
Long:
I purchased this device as part of a PC based video conferecing setup that I was putting together. The idea was to use bluetooth to connect wirelessly to the PC.
After receiving the device and reading the manual I attempted to pair it with several different computers. I tried windows XP pro, windows 7 pro and even Ubuntu linux. I tried a Dell 370 integrated bluetooth chip, a Logitech bluetooth usb dongle and an integrated Broadcom bluetooth chip (in an Acer laptop). On the windows systems I even tried using three different bluetooth stacks (Widcomm, BlueSoleil and Toshiba). All of these combinations were unable to pair and transceive audio with the Quattro2.
I have no problem using motorola and jawbone bluetooth headsets with these computers.
To make sure that the bluetooth actually worked I tried the same process with several cell phones. I was able to pair it with my samsung galaxy s android phone but only got one way audio (audio came out of the speaker but the microphone did not send any audio).
I was more seccessful when using an iphone 3g and an iphone 4. Both of these devices had full audio support though I can't comment on real life usibilty as I only had the iphones on loan for a few minutes.
Next I decided to contact Phoenix Audio customer support directly to see if they could help me with this problem.
The first email response I got mentioned that they use a “...top of the line, BlueTooth chipset,...” and after further inquery I was informed that it is a “WT32-A-A13o2d by Blue Giga”. Doing some research on this company and their bluetooth modules revealed that this device uses the older iWRAP 3 bluetooth stack and not the newer iWRAP 4 version. I would hardly call this top of the line.
I described my situation in detail and explained all of the things that I had already tried. One of the responses I received was “we cannot support all the computer setups and drivers that are out there”. I thought that was an acceptable response so I asked them if they could provide me with the name of one bluetooth dongle that worked so that I could purchase it somewhere. I was just asking for a single solution that worked and that I could duplicate. They even wrote that they had successfully tested "numerous dongles" in their lab. Unfortunately as of this writing they have not provided me with this information. Several weeks have past since I last heard from them so I do not expect to be hearing from them again.
Fortuantely the USB audio works and I have resorted to using the device with a USB extension cable. However if you are a new buyer save yourself some money and go for the non bluetooth model. Better yet find a product from a different manufactuer.
Overall I am extremely unhappy with Phoenix Audio Technologies and will never recommend or buy another product from them again.
