3CX Phone System for Windows is a software-based IP PBX that replaces a proprietary hardware PBX / PABX. 3CX’s IP PBX has been developed specifically for Microsoft Windows and is based on the SIP standard – making it easier to manage and allowing you to use any SIP phone (software or hardware).
What will you Installing your 3CX Phone System on? To use 3CX Phone System, you will need at least Windows XP Pro, Vista Business, 7 Pro, 2003 Server, 2008 or Windows 2008R2. You will also need .NET Framework version 3.5 or higher, at least 1GB of memory and at least a Pentium 4 processor. For install, you need Internet Explorer 7 or higher or Firefox 2 or higher. If you are using a VoIP Provider or remote extensions, you will have to have a fixed IP. DynDNS configurations are not supported. When installing, make sure you have approximately 50 MB of disk space available for the 3CX Program. If you already own this, you can skip this step. If you would like a Server dedicated to your 3CX Phone System, we recommend PhoneBochs. PhoneBochs Servers come in a few different configurations and have Windows 7 Professional and the 3CX Free Edition pre-installed. To install your full version of 3CX, simply enter the license key code!
3CX Phone System is licensed by the maximum number of Simultaneous Calls (SC) that will be running on the system at any given moment. The features that are accessible using 3CX Phone System are the same regardless of whether you choose Mini, Small Business, Professional, or Enterprise... the only difference is how many simultaneous calls you have coverage for. If you will be using 3CX in a call center environment, you should use the 3CX Call Center Edition.
How will you connect to the PSTN? If you are using a VoIP Service provider, you can skip this step. If not, PhoneBochs supports Sangoma TDM Cards or you can use a third party external gateway. To know what you need, you must know how you are going to connect? Will you connect via POTS (plain old telephone system) lines? If so how many phone lines do you have to connect? This will determine how many FXO ports you need. If you would like the FXO built in to your PhoneBochs or other Windows server, choose a Sangoma TDM Card. If not, choose a Patton or Grandstream Gateway.
If you will be using your 3CX Phone System in a hotel environment, you have the option of adding on a Hotel Module. The Hotel Module, available with or without PMS integration, adds functionality to your 3CX Phone System. With it, you can allow for check in and check out of guests, allow setting of guest extensions to Do Not Disturb, block external calls, schedule wake up calls, allow housekeeping to set room status, and track guest calls for billing purposes. Another add on module, the Voice Application Designer (VAD) is a building tool that allows you to create complex custom voice applications using a point and click system that is integrated into the 3CX Phone System. Not only does this save hours or days of the application building time investment, since it is build into the 3CX system, time consuming maintenance is virtually eliminated.
You will need at least one network switch to connect your IP Telephones to your network. We always recommend a PoE Enabled switch to reduce the amount of power outlets needed at the workspace. All the phones we recommend are PoE Enabled, so if you install a PoE switch, you will not need to buy additional power supplies for your phones. It is also important to have at least a Smart Switch if not a Managed Switch when using VoIP. QoS (quality of service) is an important feature offered on Smart and Managed switches that allows voice prioritization on converged networks with both data and voice are using the same LAN.
Perhaps the most visible part of a PBX solution are the phones that are connected to it. The phone you decide to use is only as powerful as the PBX system it is connected to so don't be fooled into thinking that this is the most important part of your PBX deployment. VoIP Supply recommends Cisco Small Business, Grandstream, Polycom, or Yealink phones to connect to 3CX systems, although most other SIP-based IP Phones will work. When choosing a phone, remember that all the phones recommended below are PoE Enabled, so a PoE enabled switch is recommended. You can add a power supply separately if you need one (Grandstream and Yealink automatically ship with one).
