Understanding the Navigation Keys on the Grandstream GXP1615

September 26, 2016 by Steve Lopian

VoIP phones nowadays do a really good job as far as labeling what buttons do what, but have you ever wondered if a single button could have more than one function? Well, I am about to let the cat out of the bag, and tell you what they most certainly can!

The majority of VoIP phones you will see today have what are called Navigation Keys. These are usually a set of arrow keys that allow you to navigate through your options if you do not have a touch screen. If you are not familiar with this set of buttons, then check out the picture below.

gxp1615

Oftentimes, these keys can serve more functions than just a simple left, right, up, and down. For this blog, we will use the Grandstream GXP1615 as an example of what else these buttons can do.

When your phone is idle, hitting the UP arrow key will actually allow you to view your missed calls! This is a great feature to have, and will save you from having to navigate the menu to see what calls you have missed!

Also, while your phone is idle, hitting the DOWN key will allow you to see a list of numbers that you have dialed. This is really nice, especially if you frequently dial the same number. Ultimately, this will save you from having to go into your contacts list, and is a much better option than dialing that number over and over again.

Lastly, hitting the RIGHT arrow key will access a list of phone numbers that you have answered! This can be a fast and easy way to call someone back that you just got off the phone with, or if you need to pass along a message, but forgot to take down the callers phone number.

So, the lesson today is to never judge a button by its icon. You never know what else they might be able to do to make your job easier. And now that you have the inside scoop, you will be lightning fast in the office and impressing your coworkers in no time!

VoIP Service: Top 5 Myths and Realities

September 21, 2016 by Ying-Hui Chen

new-voip-myths
As our VoIP experts help customers solve VoIP questions along the way, we noticed that there are some common misunderstandings about VoIP that create unnecessary apprehensions when switching to a VoIP system.

Therefore, we’d like to speak to the top 5 VoIP myths to help you understand the reality of VoIP.

Myth#1 VoIP service is expensive and difficult to set up.

Reality: Most VoIP users experience lower monthly rate. On average, our VoIP specialists save customers 30% off their monthly bills. In addition, a hosted VoIP system has little upfront costs and no need to have IT staff on site, since most of the necessary equipment/ maintenance is provided by the service provider.

Myth#2 I will have to put up with poor call quality or interruptions.

Reality: With proper setup and equipment, your VoIP system can deliver high quality calls just like your landline. Make sure you have enough bandwidth and network speed with suitable phones, headsets, and microphone to generate high call quality. See VoIP Network Checklist for more information.

Myth#3 I can’t keep my old phone number if I switch to a VoIP system.

Reality: It depends on whether your VoIP service provider offers this service. In most cases, you can keep your existing PSTN phone number for VoIP. You can consult your service provider before you switch.

Myth#4 I will lost VoIP network when the power goes down.

Reality: If you have a Backup Power Supply (UPS) ready for all the required elements, your VoIP network will stay up running even during a power outage. It’s only if your Internet service provider experiences a power outage that your VoIP network could go down. If that is the case, you can keep your landline service available for emergency calls. Read more: When the Power Goes Out, Does the VoIP Network Stay Up?

Myth#5 VoIP is not secure.

Reality: Similar to your computer network, a VoIP system may be exposed to malicious IP activities. Therefore we recommend Session Border Controllers (SBCs) and firewalls to help control and screen network data to prevent VoIP traffic overload and stop suspicious activities from entering your VoIP system. With proper precaution, your VoIP system is secure. See more suggestions to make your VoIP system secure.

Cisco SPA504G: Choosing Your Preferred Audio Device

September 20, 2016 by Steve Lopian

Not everyone is the same. We all prefer different things, and have different ways of doing things, especially when it comes to work!

If you find yourself on the phone most of the day at work, then you probably have a preference of how you like to hear the person on the other line. Some people like to use the handset, if you are in a private office then maybe you prefer the speakerphone, but most of us enjoy using a headset.

cisco-spa504gIf your office phone is a Cisco SPA504G, then you could be in luck! Did you know that this phone allows you to pick where the audio is sent to just by answering a call?

It is actually very simple to do. All you have to do is press the Setup button, and from there go to Preferences followed by PreferRed Audio Device and finally Edit.

From the Edit page, simply press Option, and from there you are able to scroll through the option of either Headset or Speakerphone. Setting either of these will determine where the audio comes out of just by answering the call. Once you have selected your preference, you can then hit OK, and this setting will be saved.

No that you have designated your audio device, the next time you receive an incoming call, just answer with the line button and your audio will be delivered just the way you like it! Was this post helpful? Let us know by sharing or putting a comment below!
