The Polycom VVX300: Where did the ghost calls come from?

May 31, 2017 by Ying-Hui Chen

Our tech support team at VoIP Supply offers great pre- and post-sales support plus provisioning, consultations, configuration, and installation help. We get a lot of VoIP hardware and software questions and would like to share the solutions with everyone.

In the previous Mom’s calling Q&A series, we have discussed: When I try to edit in the web interface it claims local file has higher priority…  Today, we have more new real questions and answers from VoIP users just like you.

The Polycom VVX300: Where did the ghost calls come from?

Q: We are using Polycom’s VVX300 phones. We have gotten lots of ghost calls and I wonder where those calls came from?

A: The ghost calling is usually created by uPnP or SIP ALG that might be enabled on the router. Be sure to have a password listed on the PBX for your extension.

10 Questions to Ask Your VoIP Service Provider

May 30, 2017 by Ying-Hui Chen

10-questions-to-askChoosing a VoIP service provider is not an easy task. To select the right VoIP service that you won’t regret, you will have to answer some questions regarding your application such as calling habits, your location, your budget, and the knowledge of your technical staff. Let me share with you the 10 must-ask questions you need to know when selecting a VoIP service provider!

10 Questions to Ask Your VoIP Service Provider

#1 Are you providing a premise or hosted service?

A managed (hosted) service provider reduces your resources and responsibilities while the premise option simply provides the voice network and you administer your own network.

#2 What hardware options are available for my hosted service?

Understand what kind of devices you and your employees need and make sure your service provider has the hardware selection options you want.

#3 What kind of customer service support do you have?

Seek out the service providers comment to investment in their technology and support services. Make sure they have a convenient support channel for you to reach out.

#4 Do you support E-911 or other service features?

Consider special requirements you may have for your business and ask your Cloud service provider if they have them covered. Sometimes it’s negotiable with some providers.

cloudspan_banner

#5 What services are included versus fee-based add-ons?

Some services a provider offers may cost you extra fees. So be sure to ask what services are included and what are not in the contract.

#6 How is the call quality?

If you choose a hosted system, on-site devices such as Quality of Service should be avoided. Make sure you can have good call quality you expect.

#7 How reliable is the service?

Will you experience any service downtime? In what situation can that happen? If you can’t have any downtime, ask if there’s any backup system or other solutions.

#8 Customer experience?

service-guide-imageHave they ever handled any customers who face the similar situation as yours? What were their experiences? Do they have case studies? You should also search customer reviews and ask questions if anything raises concerns.

#9 Do you have disaster discovery capability?

What happens to your data, recordings, and voicemails in the event of a disaster wiping out a service provider’s data center? Do they have a backup plan and will the service always be available?

#10 Depth of Service Level Agreement (SLA)?

Read the small print and ask questions if anything raise any concerns. Be aware of what happens when something goes wrong, beforehand.

How to Manage Running Applications on the Grandstream GXV3275

May 26, 2017 by Steve Lopian

What if I asked you what your most important piece of technology is? You would have to say your smartphone, right? Smartphones have become an essential part of our lives. They are almost an extension of ourselves!

If know everyone, at one point or another, has had that sinking feeling when you reach for your phone and it’s not there. It has to be one of the worst feelings in the world! And thinking about how upsetting forgetting or losing your phone makes you feel has to make you wonder how we ever got through a day in our lives without one!

Now that I have you checking to make sure you have your smartphone on you, my next question is when is it hardest to use your smartphone? I believe most of you would answer that question with “at work!”

Most of the time it is frowned upon to use your smartphone at work, or even have your smartphone out on your desk. This may be why you see so many people with their faces glued to their phones on their lunch break.

Thanks to the rapid pace of technology, there is now an answer to not being able to have your smartphone out at work! The answer is the Grandstream GXV3275. This phone is a smartphone disguised as a desk phone! Everything that is equipped on your smartphone is on the GXV3275. Everything from a camera to applications. This phone is even Android-based, so it will run just like your smartphone.

gxv3275

With that being said, when you are using applications on your GXV3275, they will stay open even if you close them, just like on your phone. Doing this can really bog down your phones speed, and it will do the same to the GVX3275. If you already own this incredible IP phone and didn’t know this, then you might have a lot of cleanup to do!

How to Manage Running Applications on the Grandstream GXV3275

But don’t worry. It’s just as easy to manage running applications on the GXV3275 as it is on  your smartphone, just follow the steps below:

  1. On the GXV3275 desktop, press the Home button for about 2 seconds
  2. Slide the running application to the left or right to stop the application
  3. Tap on the Broom icon to delete all running applications

After cleaning out your running applications your GXV will be squeaky clean! If you would like some advanced options when in the “Thread Manager” then all you have to do is press the applications menu that is located to the right for advanced management options.

Do you use the GXV3275 for your desk phone? Do you utilize all of its features? We want to know!

Enterprise Session Border Controller (eSBC): Why can’t I just connect my Phone to a SIP trunk?

May 25, 2017 by Ying-Hui Chen

esbc

Cost saving is one of the main reasons for many businesses and enterprises to move to VoIP. For businesses that deploy SIP trunks, it may be tempting to cut corners by using lower cost network elements, or by omitting some devices they considered “non-essential” but nice-to-have.

One question we often hear is “Why can’t I just connect my IP Phone or IP PBX to a SIP trunk?” Well, to answer that question, let’s take a look at the risks you are exposed to without an extra protection.

Issue #1 – Security

You may encounter unexpected high phone bills. According to the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) report, the Internet-based toll fraud cost small business victims $6.08 billion in 2015. Hacking, spamming, and tampering are difficult to prevent without an extra layer of protection.

Failing to encrypt the SIP signaling data can expose such information as user credentials, phone numbers, IP addresses and aspects of the company network topology to malicious intruders.

Solution:

Both SIP signaling information and media content (digitized voice) must be protected (hidden) by encryption.

A high-quality eSBC like Patton’s SN4451 Series will provide a rich set of security features that protect the provider WAN network and the customer LAN from each other, as well as from external security vulnerabilities.

Issue # 2 – Reliability

IP telephony operates over a complicated computer-based network and it can have network failure and downtime if it’s not protected. Such network failures can cause gaps in a company’s phone service resulting in disrupted communications and loss of business continuity.

Solution:

Patton’s SN4511 eSBCs provides a failover mechanism, and that also provides media gateway and IP routing functions, can deliver survivability for voice and data over a fallback connection to the local phone company (PSTN).

Issue #3 – Service Quality

Bad service quality is the worst. You could lose customers or subscribers because of the poor voice quality or unreliable service.

Solution:

Patton’s SN4451 eSBCs provide dual Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms that include:

  • Bandwidth Reservation – minimum link capacity allocated for voice packets
  • Downstream QoS – throttling mechanisms that limit and slow down large downstream data bursts to prevent flooding the capacity of the link.

Issue #4 – Interoperability

Potential business customers have selected innumerable brands of (traditional or IP-based) PBXs and phones. How many can you realistically certify for guaranteed interoperability with your network elements, protocols, and services?

Solution:

Patton’s eSBCs provide legacy interfaces that IP-enable existing ISDN and POTS business phone systems helps businesses preserve the value and extend the useful life of their capital investments in traditional telephony solutions. While taking advantage of the cost-saving and operational benefits of IP telephony, such solutions enable companies to migrate to converged communications at the pace they deem most comfortable and cost-effective.

CopperLink PoE Ethernet Extender Changes the Digital Signage Revolution

May 24, 2017 by Ying-Hui Chen

copperlink-inforgraphic

Fast-food chains typically experience a 10 to 50% boost in sales after installing digital menu boards. – According to Digital SignageToday. Among quick-service restaurants (QSRs) studied, 11% achieved payback on their investment within 6 months and another 30% within 12 months.

The use of small-screen digital displays is growing. However, implementing new digital signage comes with a few challenges. Luckily, the CopperLink PoE Ethernet Extender kits (CL 1101) from Patton Electronics has the solutions. Let’s focus on the top three challenges: Cost, Distance, and Infrastructure.

copperlink

Challenge One: Cost

To deliver requisite electrical power to the desired signage location, AC power construction may be required: opening walls, digging into the pavement, running the wiring, installing power connections, and then cleaning up the mess. This process can cost your business a fortune.

Solution

The CopperLink Ethernet Extender eliminates the need for construction projects to install network cabling, electrical service wiring, or power outlets. Because the Patton PoE solution leverages low-voltage copper twisted-pair wiring to deliver power to PoE screen panels, the high costs of contracting and licensing a high-voltage cabling project are entirely avoided.

Challenge Two: Distance

In many applications (notably outdoor and campus environments), the optimal position for the digital sign is located far beyond the 300 feet (100 meters) reach of standard Ethernet.

Solution

Available in commercial desktop (CL1101) and hardened-industrial (CL1101E) enclosures, Patton’s PoE Ethernet Extender kits can extend Ethernet connectivity up to 3,300 feet (far beyond 330 feet limit for standard Ethernet) while delivering up 15 watts of electrical power to PoE endpoint devices – all transmitted across existing common copper phone wire.

Challenge Three: Infrastructure

Many project sites lack sufficient installed infrastructure to support IP-network communications between the display panel and the computer that manages and controls it. The same may also be true or supporting electrical wiring to and power outlets at the display screen location.

Solution

The remote unit in these kits does not require a local power source. Even so, it provides up to 15 watts of PoE power to the remotely connected digital sign (or other PoE-enabled devices).

The solution uses network bridging technology to transmit Ethernet LAN traffic transparently to all higher-layer protocols.

So do you think PoE Ethernet extender technology will be a game-changer for mass adoption of digital signage?Check out CL 1101 Ethernet Extender!

The VoIP Addict’s Guide: Using the Elastix to FreePBX Conversion Tool

learningWhen we first learn that Elastix had suffered an untimely demise, we were a little surprised. The good folks at Palo Santo had built a well-known and loved the platform that seemed to do all its capabilities. Elastix’s popularity was widespread across the globe, which now causes a problem for those still using a platform that’s no longer commercially supported.

While you can still download, install, and use Elastix, you won’t be receiving any updates or security patches, and for businesses that rely on VoIP technology as a critical service, that’s a big problem. Thankfully, our friends at Sangoma created a script to move your Elastix configuration to a new installation of FreePBX, for those of you considering it as an alternative. This is possible because FreePBX is embedded into the background inter-workings of Elastix which enabled its phone system functionality. We read through Sangoma’s conversion documentation and decided to give it a try.

Because we are traversing two very different versions of FreePBX, not everything will make it over on a conversion.

What won’t make it over:

  • Call History (CDR)
  • Fax Configuration
  • Custom Configuration Files
  • Call Queue Metrics
  • Anything not a core FreePBX module
  • Operating system and network settings

What will transfer:

  • Extensions
  • Routes
  • Trunks
  • MOH
  • IVRs
  • Ring Groups
  • Queues
  • Custom music on hold
  • Voicemails
  • Voicemail Greetings
  • System Recordings

To test, we set up an Elastix 2.5 installation with some extensions, a call queue, some routes, a trunk, and ring groups.

The official instructions from Sangoma can be found here.

Pre-requisites:

  • You’ll need an installation of FreePBX version 10.33.66 x64, that’s activated
  • Run the FreePBX Firewall wizard and use all of the default options
  • Your Elastix system must be at a minimum based on FreePBX version 2.9
  • Both systems must have full network access to each other (check your firewalls)

The Procedure:

  • Console into your new FreePBX install and run the command

image1-new

  • Leave the field blank and press enter, FreePBX will indicate “Waiting for Donor”

image11

  • Cody the generated slot identifier, then run the same command on Elatix.

image3

  • Enter in the slot identifier where it asks for the “Conversion ID”

image4

  • Type “Y” when prompted “Do you want to copy/tftpboot to the new machine” if you have provisioned phones in Elastix, otherwise type “N”
  • Watch the maigc happen! (Elastix Left, FreePBX Right)

image5

Once complete, you will need to disable your trunks in Elastix, or shut the system down, and then enable them in FreePBX. They will be disabled by default to avoid registration issues.

You’ll find your extensions retain the same passwords so your phones will register without any modifications to their internal settings. However, if you experience issues with phone registrations, check your firewall on FreePBX and make sure you are allowing SIP from the correct interface.

Enjoy your newly converted phone system!

Happy VoIPing!
